For sustainable development in the earth resource industries
The Strzelecki Awards are named in honour of Polish explorer and mineralogist, Sir Pawel Edmund de Strzelecki (1797 – 1873),who travelled extensively in Australia in the 1830s. Strzelecki advocated the rational use of natural resources while still protecting the environment.

Congratulations to the winners
The awards were announced by Energy and Resources Minister Peter Batchelor at on 17 August at the 2009 Resources Victoria Conference . Earth resources operators Austral Bricks, Iluka Resources and Imerys Minerals have been recognised for their commitment to sustainable development through the 2009 Strzelecki Awards.
- Winner - Large Earth Resource Operation Category - Austral Bricks/Golder Associates for its Scoresby Quarry rehabilitation project;
- Commendation - Large Earth Resource Operation Category - Iluka Resources for the sustainable operation of its Douglas Mine;
- Winner - Medium Sized Earth Resource Operation Category - Imerys Minerals Australia for its water recycling scheme at its Pittong Mine, and its provision of accommodation to users of the Ballarat to Skipton rail trail;
- Winner - Exploration Projects Category - Iluka Resources for its environmentally-sustainable exploration works in Little Youngs Timber Reserve.
- No award was made in the Small Earth Resource Category.

About the Strzelecki Awards
Established in 2005, the Strzelecki Awards recognise outstanding achievements in the area of sustainable development within the Victorian earth resource industries.
The Strzelecki Awards are jointly administered by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and the Banksia Environmental Foundation. Banksia will be conducting the entry and judging processes on behalf of DPI and will provide entrants with advice and information during the entry period.
In addition, DPI officers are available to provide further support and expert advice with the application process.

- Formal recognition by the Victorian Government of excellence in the management of sustainable development issues related to your business
- Opportunity to develop and strengthen networks with environmental groups, government, industry and local communities

Award winners:
- Receive valuable publicity in the local and state press. In addition DPI’s publication ‘Discovery’ (distributed to 4000 industry leaders and stakeholders across Victoria, interstate and internationally) will include features on the awards winners
- Are presented with a Strzelecki Award by the Minister for Energy and Resources at an industry celebration/presentation in August 2009
- Receive a 2009 Strzelecki Awards watermark to place on their business/organisation letterhead
- Can gauge their sustainability agenda and achievements against other companies.
2009 Strzelecki Award categories
The Strzelecki Awards will be offered across four different categories
- Small Earth Resource Operation
Presented for overall excellence and innovationin sustainable earth resource development in a small resource development operation.
- Medium Sized Earth Resource Operation
Presented for overall excellence and innovation in sustainable earth resource development in a medium sized resource development operation.
- Large Earth Resource Operation
Presented for overall excellence and innovation in sustainable earth resource development in a large resource development operation.
- Exploration Projects
Nominations to the exploration category can relate to any project principally involving exploration for minerals, petroleum, stone or geothermal energy.
Applicants should use the criteria set out below as a guide in determining which category is appropriate for their project.
