2010 Award Criteria

  • The Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year Award acknowledges the vital contribution made by young Australians to the environment. It covers the environmental spectrum where individuals can affect change at a local, national or international level. Entry is for individuals aged 18–30 years.

    Self-nominations and nominations on behalf of another individual and organisations are accepted. Nominated individuals and organisations must have achieved outcomes that have:

    • made a major contribution to the environment
    • improved our understanding and appreciation of the environment and our place in it now and for a sustainable future, and/or
    • provided leadership or inspired others in environmental management or protection

    2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity and entries demonstrating a commitment to the protection and conservation of Australia’s biodiversity are encouraged.

    Judging will take into account long term commitment to achieving positive environmental outcomes, with an emphasis on results and implementation over the past five years.

  • Eligible entries are actions or projects that contribute to any or all of the following outcomes:
  • 1. Conserving our natural assets: conservation and protection of Australia's unique biodiversity
    2. Living and working sustainably: commitment to working for sustainable development initiatives that increase our understanding of climate change and how to adapt to it; encourage better recycling and waste management; and more efficient use of energy and natural resources
    3. Protecting Antarctica
    4. Adapting to a future with less water: protection and conservation of the health of Australia’s oceans, rivers and waterways and marine species and encouraging efficient use of water resources
    5. Protecting and enhancing Australia’s heritage
    6. Working to increase the understanding of the environment among Australia’s youth
    7. Promoting environmental volunteerism

    General Eligibility

    Your actions or project must have recent significance and outcomes which have occurred over the last two years.  The actions or project must be primarily undertaken in Australia, or must be shown to have a substantial environmental impact in Australia.  The organisation or individual must not have been prosecuted for a violation of any environmental, social or commercial law in Australia or overseas in the past 12 months.

    Refer to Award Entry Kit for extra eligibility requirements.

    How to Enter the Award

    Before submiting an entry in the 2009 Environment Minister's Young Environmentalist of the Year Award you need to do the following: -

    1. Deciding to enter -

    a. make sure that you are eligible (see general eligibility)
    b. don't forget to check  the other awards such as the Banksia Category Awards (separate entry required), the Prime Minister's Environmentalist of the Year Award (separate entry required) or the Mercedes-Benz Australian Environmental Research Award (separate entry required). 
    Each of these awards have separate entry kits.

    2. A download an entry kit

    a. the Award Entry Kit should provide you with all the information you require such as:
    - submission requirements including entry format and supporting documentation;
    - category criteria and
    - entry form.
    b. You will need to register your information with us when you download any Award Entry Kits.
    It is important to register for our email newsletter also as this is our method of communicating with you during the Award period to advise of any changes, deadlines or other important information.

    3. Make sure you are familiar with the Award timelines.

    4. Attend the free Banksia Award Entry Information Sessions which are run nationally in March 2009.

    a. the sessions are designed to assist you with preparing your entry providing useful tips.
    b. it is a useful forum to get questions answered.

    2009 Environment Minister's Young Environmentalist of the Year

    Australian Youth Climate Coalition

    The Australian Youth Climate Coaliton (AYCC) is an umbrella organisation representing a broad range of youth organisations across Australia concerned about climate change. Climate change poses the greatest threat to our future and the AYCC aim to educate and mobilise their generation to combat it.

    The AYCC coordinates a comprehensive national education program which involves:

    • Supporting and resourcing the programs of their member organisations
    • Training volunteers, “AYCC Climate Messengers”, to deliver presentations and workshops in schools and communities
    • Assisting high school students in establishing their own climate change action groups
    • Developing resources for young people to use in educating their communities about climate change
    • Providing opportunities for young people across the country to volunteer, meet one another, share ideas and communicate.

    The AYCC has energised thousands of young Australians to build a generation-wide movement to address the challenges of climate change.  As an organisation, they have inspired, educated, empowered and mobilised young Australians.
